Excerpts from deCotes family tree, source 4.

The Cotonian Pedigree from AD 1200 to 1819.
The Pedigree and descent of the ancient and worthy familie of the Cottons of Hadnet and Alkington, in the counties of Salop, from whom the Cottons of Easton and Marlesford, countie Suffolk descended.

The Ancestors of Sir Hugh Cotton, where according to reliable authorities, seated at Hadnet long before the conquest, anciently called either, “Cotes – Coten or Coton or Cotten, which is but a change from the singular to the plural, and quite intelligible when it is considered that it probably corresponded with the multiplication of dwellings in any particular spot where the road which passed between Hadnet & Stoke, must have crossed the river. The Cotons of Coton Cheshire, being descendants of the Cotons of Coton Hadnet Salop, were consequently settlers in the Countie of Cheshire at a much later period than the Cotes or Cotens of Hadnet.

The Cotes or Cotens of Lencestershire (LAN) were undoubtedly of the same familie, while the Cottons of Cambridge were quite distinct, the latters being descendants from the Cotons settled at Coton in Kent long before the conquest. Cotton is the place in the departments of Calvades Normandy and is also the name of places in different counties in England. The Conqueror gave the Cotons of Hadnet, their area when they were Falconers to the King. The “Crest”, a Falcon with Bells, and a strap and buckle round one leg ready for slipping. The “Arms”, three leashes for Falcon’s legs with a Chevron, Silver and Blue ground. The “Mottoe” – “In Utraque Fortuna”. The free translation of which is, Prepared for either fortune.

The Ancestors of Sir Hugh Cotton, where according to reliable authorities, seated at Hadnet long before the conquest, anciently called either, “Cotes – Coten or Coton or Cotten, which is but a change from the singular to the plural, and quite intelligible when it is considered that it probably corresponded with the multiplication of dwellings in any particular spot. Cotes and Coten meaning literally cottages, where anciently common names of Hamlets. Cotton is a place on the river Fern and near the spot where the road which passed between Hadnet and Stoke, must have crossed the river. The Cotons of Coton Cheshire, being descendants of the Cotons of Coton of Hadnet Salop, were consequently settlers in the Countie of Cheshire at a much later period than the Cotes or Cotens of Hadnet.

The Cotes or Cotens of Lencestershire (LAN) were undoubtedly of the same familie, while the Cottons of Cambridge were quite distinct, the latters being descendants from the Cotons settled at Coton in Kent long before the conquest. Cotton is

the place in the departments of Calvades Normandy and is also the name of places in different counties in England. The Conqueror gave the Cotons of Hadnet, their arms when they were Falconers to the King.

This author (RGHC), has found it in another source as “In utraque fortuna paratus”.

Cotton is the place in the departments of Calvades Normandy and is also the name of places in different counties in England. The Conqueror gave the Cotons of Hadnet, their arms when they were Falconers to the King.

This author (RGHC), has found it in another source as “In utraque fortuna paratus”.
